Abstract: This applied thesis offers an English translation of an Arabic novel titled Al Najdi by Talib Al Rifai and provides a translation commentary that sheds light on the various translational difficulties that occur during the process of translation. The most prominent difficulties will receive a meticulous categorization and analysis so as to better understand the intricacies of translating a literary piece from Arabic into English. The commentary will discuss major procedures of the translated work: foreignization, domestication, transliteration, addition, and omission. While these procedures appear to be too large to account for, each of them receives intricate branching that includes target language layout features and punctuation, voice, coherence and cohesion, addition and omission, explicitation and implicitation, and achieving equivalent effect in regards to metaphors and figurative language.
