Title: Assessment of Ambient Air Quality in Jleeb-AlShuyoukh and Dasman Areas in The State of Kuwait with Two Different Traffic Intensities

Abstract: Severe episodes of air pollution occurred in large cities in the last century, resulting in the death of thousands of people due to unfavorable weather conditions and the absence of adequate control systems. In general, the largest contribution of the pollutant load in metropolises is associated with the transport sector. Reference values are established by competent authorities to determine when these pollutants become dangerous. This study aims to analyze air quality in two areas of the state of Kuwait with different traffic intensity according to Ministry of Interior of Kuwait database. Jleeb AlShuyokh, next to very busy main roads and Dasman area, next to a less busy road. A 6year period, from 2012 to 2017, data of wind speed, wind direction and pollutants concentration was analyzed using OpenAir package. Northwest wind direction was predominant both in Road 50 and Al-Mansouriya stations. In Dasman area CO levels did not exceed the limits defined by KEPA. In Jleeb Al-Shuyokh, all the pollutants exceeded the standards. NO2, CO, and O3 had more hours in which levels exceeded the limits in Jleeb Al-Shuyokh area. Dasman area had 1545 exceedances levels of NO2, while Jleeb Al-Shuyokh had 2747. CO 31 exceedances in Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh, compared to none in Dasman area. S02 had 11 exceedances in Dasman area and 6 in Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh, besides the difference of traffic intensity. Based on the USEPA, WHO, British Columbia and Australian Department of Environment, in some periods the levels of the pollutants in Al-Mansouriya exceed the reference values for more hours than in Al-Shuyoukh. However, the pollutant levels show a tendency of decrease in Al-Mansouriya. In Jleeb Al-Shuyokh area There was a strong positive correlation between NO2 and CO (R2 = 0.61) and a mild correlation between CO and SO2 (R2 = 0.23). The positive correlation between CO2 and SO2 was insignificant (R2 = 0.13). Similarly, between CO and PM10 (R2 = 0.02), there was an insignificant positive correlation. O3 has a strong negative correlation with NO2 (R2 = -0.48) and CO (R2 = -0.41). The busy roads around Jleeb AlShuyokh seems to be a greater source of pollutants than the less busy road near Dasman area. It’s possible to make an inference that the higher traffic intensity of Jleeb AlShuyokh is impacting the region air quality.
