The English Translation and Commentary of Hamza’s Abbass Book: And I Have Advised You: the memoir of the founder and the first Governor of Kuwait’s Central Bank

Abstract

This thesis is a translation and a commentary of a book entitled ونصحت لكم And I Have Advised You by Hamza Abbas Hussain. The book narrates the story of an important economic figure in Kuwait and dicusses several economic issues that faced Kuwait which might still have an impact on the modern lives of Kuwaitis now, from the perspective of the author. The directionality of the translation is from Arabic into English. The book is an autobiography which can be challenging from a translational point of view, because of the narrative style of the author and the discrepancy between the narrative styles of the source and the target languages. Translation difficulties and problems such as culture-bound expressions, technical terms, euphemisms, and religous terms are discussed throughout the commentary part of the project. Several translation procedures such as addition, translitiration, domestications, and forreinization are used to tackle these difficulties and problems. The commentary will highlight the main translation issues a translator may face when translating economic books and memoirs and how to overcome them.
