dc.description.abstractAn exposure to Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in fuel stations has become an important issue for research in the field of air pollution in recent years. This is because of its significance to the health of employees working at the fuel stations and for the car drivers who spend time in the station. This thesis concern to investigate the air quality and employee exposure to VOCs in gas stations (service stations) in Kuwait was investigated. Specifically, the VOC concentrations are measured and compared to the global exposure limits that are set by Kuwait Environment protection authority (KEPA) and other global standards. Five service stations were selected in this study. Two gas stations are located on highways and the other are in the inner part of the cities. Thirty nine personal exposures (Active sampling) and 3 air quality (passive sampling) data sets were gathered in this study. VOC concentrations were collected using thermal desorption tubs method and analyzed using Gas Chromatography-Flame Ionization detector (GC-FID). The mean VOC concentrations of the analyzed samples were well below the global standards limits and Kuwait EPA standard limits. The results also show that there are some of the VOCs compounds that were detected with high concentrations such as: (Benzene 3.69 ppb, 2-methyl butane 2.22 ppb, Toluene 2.12 ppb, Ethyl Benzene 1.97 ppb, N-Hexane 1.28 ppb, 3-methylhexane, 0.85 ppb, Undecane 0.78 ppb, Methylcyclohexane 0.277 ppb, Styrene 0.17 ppb and O-Xylene 0.07 ppb)  en_US

dc.description.conclusionsCONCLUSION Based on the results obtained in this study and the comparisons done with previous research work and studies, Kuwait Fuel station has a tolerable exposure limit of VOCs, the exposure to VOCs is low and well below the exposure limits that are set by international standards such as OSHA and NIOSH. We can conclude as following. 1. Benzene was the most dominant gas in all stations. 2. Jabria results were higher than other stations 3. 2 methilenutane is higher in 6th ring road and jabria than benzene in pump island passive sampling test. 4. Benzene is the most dominant gas in the office area for the passive sampling. 5. 2-methylbutane was not present in 6th ring road data. 6. Previous studies show higher concentration than this study. It was also found that banning smoking in the fuel station will have a positive effect as smoking generate a lot of VOCs which are also present in car exhaust fumes and fuel vapour such as Ethyl benzene , Benzene , Toluene Etc…en_US
