Title: Synthesis and Characterization of Ruthenium (II) Anthraquinone Complexes

Abstract: The presented Master Thesis describes the synthesis and characterization of mixed ligands ruthenium (II) complexes of 1-aminoanthraquinone, [Ru (bpy)2 1- AAQ]PF6 and [Ru (phen)2 1-AAQ]PF6. Attempts to synthesize [Ru (phen)21,5- DAAQ] PF6 and [Rh (phen)21-AAQ][PF6]2 were also undertaken. Spectroscopic techniques, x-ray crystallography and SEM were used to characterize the complexes. Data shows that ruthenium (II) binds to the 1-AAQ ligand through the carbonyl oxygen and the amine nitrogen. Magnetic susceptibility data reveals that the complexes are diamagnetic and are low spin. The 1-AAQ ligand is a strong field ligand and acts as a bidentate ligand. The MLCT band is at longer wavelength in [Ru (phen)2 1-AAQ]PF6 complex than [Ru (bpy)2 1-AAQ]PF6 complex. The effect of the auxiliary ligand is observed on the bond length of the carbonyl group. This bond is longer in the [Ru (bpy)2 1-AAQ]PF6 complex. Flat versus needle topographical feature is seen for the [Ru (phen)2 1-AAQ]PF6 and [Ru (bpy)2 1- AAQ]PF6, respectively.
