dc.description.abstractHeat exchangers are used in many types in oil factories. However, these exchangers are subject to various operational problems, such as fouling which is considered the most important issue since it has a significant impact on the efficiency of heat exchanger, which will be reflected clearly on the operational and economic aspects. Heat exchangers number E-14-124 at Kuwait Petroleum Company (KOC) refinery was selected for the study. This heat exchanger use seawater to cool kerosene, and was subjected to a pipeline failure in May 2015 three months before the scheduled maintenance. Therefore, the real operational readings, design data and technical inspection files available during the period from September 27, 2012 to November 9, 2015 were used. The technical situation of the heat exchanger during the operation period was considered during the study and analysis of the results. The calculations of heat transfer parameters and the relationship between them, starting from the fluid velocities and the Reynolds number to the heat transfer coefficient and the fouling factor. A regression model was developed to predict the seawater fouling tendency in the seawater heat exchangers in the refinery. Actual collected data was fitted to the model through MATLAB regression analysis to develop an equation for the fouling factor Rf as a function of temperature difference and fluid mass flowrate. Prediction of fouling factor can assist the operation team and the efficiency monitoring sector to know the technical status of the heat exchanger and the fouling tendency and fouling rate increase and therefore, prevent failure, save efforts, and minimize economical losses.en_US
